Merrell was due on the 15th so I was planning ahead by staying up late on the 9th in order to get some work done and be more available when I was really needed. I got to bed at 1:30am that evening (actually the morning of the 10th). Merrell woke me up at 4:30 am with a couple of nudges (they could have been shoves) and "I think its time". Then she proceeded to take a shower to look her best for the big show at the hospital. I ran around the house trying to figure out what to do. The first thing that came to mind was to throw on my trusty "Mr. New Dad" t-shirt - OK, I was ready. Our strategy was to try to keep Caleb asleep as long as possible and just throw him into the car in his pajamas. Instead, he woke up right away and I got him all excited about what was happening - Corinne was going to come out of Mommy's tummy.
At about 5:00 am, I called my Mom and Merrell's Dad in Columbus to let them know what was going on. They didn't seem quite as enthusiastic as I had hoped. When I asked my mom whether I should call the rest of the family she said "Perhaps not". We could let them know a little later.
Merrell had everything packed and ready to go so I just threw it in the car. She came out to the car looking beautiful - like we were going to church or something. On the way to the hospital Merrell did well to alert me to the fact that we were about to run into a car parked on the side of our street. I don't know what I was thinking about - mostly in a daze as this point.
Once we got to the hospital, the nurses were already preparing a room for us. I don't know what room they were preparing but I informed them that we would be taking room LDR #3. That was the room where we had Caleb and we were very happy with it. The nurses were very accommodating. The room has two sections; one for delivery and the other for the family who wants to be close but not too close. The two sections are separated by a door. The door unfortunately has a tendency to pop open unexpectedly on occasion. In addition, things were set up so that if the door did pop open at an inopportune moment, the family would get a real eyeful - with a view only obstructed by the doctor. We smartly barracaded it with a chair.
I have learned that the name of the game for the hospital is to see how long they can wait before the doctor shows up. Our Dr. Leary played the game well and let us know that she had 4 babies to be delivered that morning - quite a Sunday morning. I have to say though, that I was very pleased with our doctor and the nurses. They were wonderful and definitely added to the whole experience.
After several rounds of pushing on Merrell's part and pacing on mine, we had beautiful Corinne in our arms. Check out the photos below that were taken just after delivery. If you look closely at my eyes you'll see they show a lot of pride and have three hours of sleep written all over them.
Here is the email baby announcement that I sent out to the world the following day -
Hi!
Great Dilsavor family news! Merrell gave birth to beautiful Corinne Nicole Dilsavor Sunday morning at 10:48am after about 6 hours of labor. Corinne weighed in at 7 lbs 13 ozs and measured 20.5 inches in length. She scored a high and 8/10 and 9/10 on her APGAR tests, 1 and 5 minutes after birth, respectively - showing that she is a quick study. She has a good head of dark hair and her eyes look like they may be hazel - making her a carbon-based copy of her mother. So far she is entering this world much more "quietly" than did Caleb - we like to think this is a good sign. We expect Merrell and child will be at Kettering Memorial Hospital through tomorrow morning.Ron
